What an AI songwriter is actually good at
Where AI lyrics help and where they get in the way. A working method: use it for structure and options, not for the line that matters.
An AI songwriter will not write your best line. It will write your third-best line forty times in a row, and that turns out to be useful.
Here is where it earns its place.
It is good at structure
Blank page to full structure takes about ten seconds. Verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, all labelled and roughly the right length.
Most people do not struggle to write lyrics. They struggle to start. Structure removes the starting problem.
It is good at options
Ask for twelve versions of a chorus and you get twelve. Ten are unusable. One has a phrase worth keeping.
That ratio sounds bad. It is not — reading twelve options takes two minutes and writing twelve takes an afternoon.
It is good at constraints
Keep a rhyme scheme. Match a syllable count. Rewrite line four without touching lines one to three.
This is genuinely hard by hand and trivial for a model. It is the least glamorous use and probably the most valuable.
It is bad at meaning
The model does not know what your song is about. It knows what songs about that topic usually say.
So it produces the average. Serviceable, forgettable, and instantly recognisable as machine-written when you read three in a row.
The fix is not a better prompt. The fix is that you write the line the song is actually about, and let the model handle the scaffolding around it.
A method that works
- Write the hook yourself. One line. The thing you actually mean.
- Generate the structure around it. Let the model build verses that lead to your line.
- Rewrite line by line. Keep what surprises you. Replace what does not.
- Read it out loud. Anything you would not say, cut.
Then hear it
Lyrics on a page tell you very little. The same words can be great sung and terrible spoken.
