Spectrum, waveform or particle?

Four visualizer styles compared on what they suit, how they survive compression, and which platform each one belongs on.

Every visualizer reads the same audio. What changes is what it does with it, and the wrong choice makes a good track look cheap.

Spectrum

Frequency bars across the width of the frame. The default for a reason: it obviously responds to the music, and viewers understand it instantly.

Best for: electronic, hip hop, anything with a clear beat. Avoid on: sparse acoustic — there is not enough spectral movement, and it looks static.

Waveform

The amplitude line. Quieter, more editorial, less busy.

Best for: singer-songwriter, podcasts, spoken word, long mixes where a busy visual would exhaust the viewer. Compresses best of all four — hard edges and high contrast survive YouTube’s encoder intact.

Particle

Points reacting to frequency bands. The best-looking option and the most expensive to render.

Best for: a release you are actually promoting. Watch: it compresses worst. Render at 4K even if you publish at 1080p, or the fine detail turns to mush.

Canvas loop

Short, seamless, no obvious start. Built for Spotify Canvas rather than for watching.

Best for: the 3–8 second loop behind a track in the Spotify app. Rule: the last frame must meet the first, or it visibly jumps every few seconds.

One rule

Pick one and stay with it for at least twenty uploads. A channel is a promise about what the next video looks like, and changing the visual language every week breaks it.
