How to make a music visualizer for YouTube

A visualizer is the cheapest way to put a track on YouTube. No filming. No editing. The video does the work.

Here is what actually matters.

Render at 1080p, not 720p

YouTube compresses everything. It compresses 720p harder.

Upload 1920×1080 at minimum. If your visualizer has fine detail. Spectrum bars, particles — go 4K. YouTube gives 4K uploads a better codec, and the difference shows even when someone watches at 1080p.

Match the aspect ratio to the surface

• 16:9. Standard YouTube video. Use this for full tracks.
• 9:16 — Shorts. Under 60 seconds, vertical, no letterboxing.
• 1:1. Not for YouTube. Save it for feeds.

Do not upload a vertical video to the main feed with black bars. It looks like a mistake and the thumbnail crops badly.

Pick a style that survives compression

High-contrast motion compresses well. Subtle gradients do not — they band.

In order of how well they hold up:

1. Waveform. Hard edges, high contrast, survives anything.
2. Spectrum. Bars are clean, but avoid heavy glow.
3. Particle — looks best, compresses worst. Render at 4K if you use it.

Length changes the maths

A three-minute single is straightforward. A one-hour mix is not.

Long renders cost more and take longer, but they earn more watch time per upload. If you are running a channel, one 60-minute mix usually outperforms twenty 3-minute uploads — fewer thumbnails to make, more session time per viewer.

Do not skip the thumbnail

The visualizer is the video. The thumbnail is the ad.

Generate cover art for the track and crop it to 1280×720. Keep the text under six words. It gets shown at the size of a postage stamp.

Upload the highest quality file you can. YouTube will make it worse. Start higher.
